Job Description:

To provide assistance to the Supervisor as a crew leader in the operation of the University Residence Halls and Dining Centers. To provide leadership functions and inventory coordination for the zone shop while also performing work in all trades areas as a working leader

General Notes

STIPEND FOR LICENSE. This position will be paid an additional monthly stipend of $500 for a current Master or Journeyman Electrical or Plumbing license and HVAC Class A or B license. The license must be issued by the State of Texas and maintained in a current status. Candidate selected must provide verification of education and/or experience. Work days, area and hours may vary based on the needs of the work group and UHD.


Leadership Duties: Assist supervisor in providing daily staff assignments, relay instructions, training, mentoring staff, conduct assessments of work performed by staff, assist staff with work orders, and communicate daily to ensure supervisor is informed, provide feedback to supervisor on staff performance.
Operations and Performance: Regularly perform work on work orders for electrical, HVAC, plumbing, kitchen equipment repairs, and painting, drywall, carpentry. Perform and/or oversee equipment repairs and routine care and maintenance of motorized equipment. Troubleshoot, identify, and diagnose systems and equipment malfunctions and perform or coordinate repairs with other trades as needed.
Safety and Emergencies: Respond to emergencies. Leads and gives directions to skilled workers and helpers in the work crew in solving problems at the job site. Drive a UT vehicle to work site, transport equipment & supplies as needed, pick up material and equipment off site. Participate and is involved with safety on the job and in the shop. Conduct safety training. Train staff on new equipment. Promote and train on lock out tag out.
Inventory and Accountability: Ensure the inventory is charged out and an accurate count of the inventory is maintained. Maintain accurate records for time and material used on each work order. Review inventory paperwork from staff to ensure material is accounted for. Ensure any unused material is added back into inventory. Assist with adding all attic stock received into inventory. Spot check inventory items for accuracy and take lead in the inventory auditing and monitoring inventory counts and re-order points.
Inspections/Work Control: Analyze computer generated work orders and prioritize repairs for routine maintenance. Motivates and ensure staff meet expectations and quality standards. Assist workers in solving work related problems at the job site. Inspects finished work for conformity to specifications and standards. Ensure work is completed in accordance with established safety procedures.
Communication: Demonstrated excellent interpersonal communication and customer service skills. Ability to communicate with supervisor, staff and student residents. Ability to give and receive direction. Support and encourage new ideas that are implemented by management. Ability to work as a team member.
Assessment/Make Ready: Assess the condition of student rooms and maintain a spreadsheet that can be used as the room condition for each room. Perform inspections to determine work needed by staff and a follow up after work is performed. Track any deficiencies not performed as a record of the room condition. Assess work by outside vendors and contractors when asked.

Required Qualifications

High school graduation or GED. Three years of experience in the trade related to the position. Use of tools and equipment common to the particular trades. Experience as a journey level lead worker in maintenance and repair in a crafts trade or facilities maintenance. Experience leading, motivating, and measuring work performance. Experience leading multiple trades in the absence of supervisor. The selected applicant must successfully complete testing for strength and agility prior to employment.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

More than three years of experience in maintenance and repair in a crafts trade or facilities maintenance. Two or more years of crew leader experience. Related experience in a higher education environment. Completion of a vocational trade school or licensed in a journey level trade craft. Experience working with budgets and performing inspections of work by others. Demonstrated computer skills using MS Word, Excel and web base programs. Demonstrated ability to receive, respond and follow through with verbal and written work related instructions. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.

Driving Required

This job requires a class “C” operator’s driver’s license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver’s license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Applicant selected must have an acceptable three year driving record and maintain an acceptable driving record and valid license throughout employment.

Salary Range

$45,000 + depending on qualifications

Work Shift

Monday – Friday, 7:45am to 4:15pm. Work days, area and hours may vary based on the needs of the work group and UHD.
